5 HIDDEN GEMS OF LONDON

Updated: Dec 30, 2019

If you're interested in visiting London, chances are you've heard of the most popular spots to hit. After all, it wouldn't be a trip to the UK's capital city without exploring the history of the Tower of London, getting a glimpse of royalty at Buckingham Palace, or strolling around Hyde Park. But what makes any of my trips complete are finding those spots off the beaten path, the places that make you feel like you've found a little secret slice of the city to savor for yourself. Read on for five of my favorite hidden gems that I've discovered in London.

1. NEAL'S YARD

This whimsical and colorful courtyard is located in the heart of one London's most popular neighborhoods, Covent Garden, but is so well-hidden that most people walk right past it without even noticing. To escape the hustle and bustle of busy Central London, sneak off for a cup of joe from Monmouth Coffee or pop into one of the cafes that line the vibrant alleyway for a snack.

2. HARRODS CHAMPAGNE TERRACE

With Harrods being one of the most famous department stores in the world, no trip to London is complete without a stop here. But if you want to escape the crowds on the main floors, sneak away to the fifth floor and discover the new Perrier-Jouët Champagne Terrace for a glass of bubbly. The tiny room is tucked away in a far corner of the store and almost impossible to find unless you know what you're looking for. This impeccably decorated space serves you in glasses hand-painted with ornate floral designs, and I guarantee that after toasting with some champagne here you'll be feeling fancy enough to buy out Harrods.

3. " RAINBOW ROW"

People usually head to Notting Hill for the Portobello Road markets. And while the markets are great, so much of the magic of the area can be found once you stray from the main streets. A gorgeous row of houses in a rainbow of colors, something that I've decided to call "Rainbow Row," lays just off the beaten path on Lancaster Road. Wander around a bit more and you'll find some beautiful homes amongst the mews and alleyways of the neighborhood. If you're lucky, you may even stumble upon the pale pink house featured in the film Love Actually!

4. THE GRENADIER

If the history of London is what excites you, make The Grenadier a can't-miss stop in your itinerary. This tiny pub is nestled in the back mews of Belgravia and while it may not be the oldest or the smallest in the city, it has an incredibly rich history. Once a gathering spot for young soldiers, The Grenadier is supposedly haunted by the ghost of Cedric, a soldier who was beaten to death in this very pub after he was caught cheating at cards. Harsh! Visitors have been known to tack money to the ceiling in an attempt to help poor Cedric pay off his debts and be released from his earthly imprisonment.

5. KEW GARDENS

While Kew Gardens isn't necessarily a secret spot, it is far enough removed from Central London that most people don't bother venturing out, even if they've heard of it. A branch of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is absolutely breathtaking at any time of year. During the spring and summer, the gardens are bursting with colorful flora and fauna. And during the winter, my personal favorite, the gardens are decked out in a spectacular display of holiday lights and decorations throughout the property for "Christmas at Kew." Don't forget to buy a ticket in advance! This winter wonderland experience is wildly popular among locals and tends to sell out.
